Rennes is Brittany’s capital, a university city of about 231,000 residents (metro ~750,000) with Roman roots as Condate and a medieval rise as the seat of the Parlement de Bretagne. Its compact centre mixes half-timbered streets with major sights: the Parlement—rebuilt after a 1994 fire—grand squares, and the 10-hectare Parc du Thabor with formal gardens and a noted rose collection. Saturday brings the Marché des Lices, one of France’s largest food markets outside Paris, while cafés and student bars keep nights lively. Getting in is easy: TGVs link Paris in as little as about 1h30, a two-line driverless metro (Line B opened 2022) covers local hops, and Rennes–Bretagne Airport (RNS) offers direct flights to a dozen-plus destinations.
