SERBIA

Heavy metal in Serbia traces its roots back to the former Yugoslavia of the early 1980s, when hard rock and heavy metal began gaining a foothold despite limited access to Western music. Bands such as Riblja Čorba and Kerber leaned more toward hard rock but inspired younger musicians to explore heavier sounds. The late 1980s saw the rise of acts like Heller, one of the first Yugoslav thrash metal bands, and Bombarder, who would later relocate to Bosnia and then Serbia.

The turbulent 1990s, marked by war and economic hardship, made touring and recording difficult, but the metal scene persisted in the underground. Bands like Rapidforce and Alogia emerged during this time, the latter becoming one of the most successful Serbian metal acts internationally, known for their progressive and power metal style. Extreme metal bands such as The Stone helped establish Serbia’s presence in the global black metal community.

Today, Belgrade is the main hub for Serbian metal, with festivals such as Arsenal Fest and Belgrade Beer Fest occasionally featuring heavier acts.
