SKI

Ski is a town and the administrative centre of Nordre Follo municipality in Akershus, Norway, with around 22,700 people in the urban settlement. Located approximately 25 kilometres south of central Oslo, the area has a much older history than the modern town, with Ski Medieval Church dating from around 1150 and prehistoric settlements found nearby. The present town developed primarily as a railway junction following the opening of Ski station in 1879, where the Eastern and Western Østfold railway lines meet. Ski received town status in 2004 and remained the administrative centre of its own municipality until merging with Oppegård to form Nordre Follo in 2020. Today it is an important commercial and transport hub for the Follo region, with Ski Storsenter, Rådhusteatret and the historic Waldemarhøy estate among its local landmarks. The opening of the Follo Line in 2022 reduced the fastest train journey to Oslo Central Station to approximately 11 minutes. Ski is also associated with an unusual piece of Norwegian history: the country’s first recorded meteorite find, discovered in the area in 1848.
