EURONYMOUS’ GRAVE

The grave of Øystein Aarseth, better known as Euronymous, is located at Ski Kirkegård in Ski, Norway. Born on 22 March 1968, Aarseth was the guitarist and one of the founders of Mayhem, formed in 1984 with bassist Jørn “Necrobutcher” Stubberud and drummer Kjetil Manheim. He became one of the central figures in the development of the early Norwegian black metal scene.

Euronymous played on Mayhem’s early recordings, including the influential “Deathcrush” EP from 1987, and was the band’s principal guitarist and songwriter during the creation of “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas”. His guitar parts for the album were completed before his death, and the record was eventually released in 1994. It went on to become one of the defining albums of Norwegian black metal.

Outside Mayhem, Aarseth founded the independent label Deathlike Silence Productions and operated the Helvete record shop in Oslo. During the early 1990s, Helvete became an important meeting place for musicians associated with the emerging Norwegian black metal scene, while Deathlike Silence released material by bands including Mayhem, Burzum, Merciless and Abruptum.

On 10 August 1993, Aarseth was murdered at his apartment in Oslo by Varg Vikernes of Burzum, who had also played bass on “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas”. Aarseth was 25 years old. Vikernes was convicted of the murder the following year.

Aarseth was laid to rest at Ski Kirkegård, close to Ski Middelalderkirke. The stone church dates from the mid-12th century and stands within the cemetery grounds. The grave is situated close to the right side of the entrance and carries his full name, Øystein Aarseth, together with the dates 22 March 1968 and 10 August 1993.
