Szeged is Hungary’s third-largest city, a sunny university hub of around 160,000 people on the River Tisza near the Serbian border, first mentioned in 1183 and rebuilt into its broad-boulevard cityscape after the Great Flood of 1879. It’s best known as the “City of Sunshine” for its high annual hours of sunlight, and for its landmark Dóm Square, dominated by the Votive Church (consecrated in 1930) and surrounded by arcades and university buildings. The compact centre is easy to explore on foot, with riverside promenades, café terraces and an easygoing, student-driven nightlife, while summer brings big open-air events and festivals that spill into the main squares.
