Heavy metal in Turkey began developing in the early 1980s, at a time when rock music was still viewed with suspicion by authorities and broader society. The first Turkish band to gain international recognition was Pentagram (also known as Mezarkabul), founded in 1986 in Istanbul. They blended traditional heavy and thrash metal with Anatolian folk melodies, creating a uniquely Turkish sound that remains highly influential.
Through the 1990s, the scene expanded with bands like Murder King (groove/thrash) and Dr. Skull, while the underground grew stronger in major cities such as Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir. Extreme metal also found a foothold: death metal acts like Cenotaph and black metal groups like Moribund Oblivion and Episode 13 became central names in the Turkish extreme scene.
Festivals and venues helped sustain the culture, with international bands regularly performing in Istanbul. The Rock’n Coke Festival (held from 2003 to 2013) brought global headliners, and smaller gatherings like Headbangers’ Weekend and Istanbul Metal Fest continue to support both local and foreign bands.
Today, Turkey’s heavy metal community remains resilient despite political and cultural challenges. From Pentagram’s pioneering fusion of Turkish music and metal to modern extreme acts touring internationally, the Turkish scene has established a unique identity within global heavy metal.
