SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the island capital and port city, home to roughly 211,000 people (2024) and founded in 1494 at the foot of Anaga’s hills. Its compact centre fans out from the revamped Plaza de España and leafy Parque García Sanabria to the oceanfront, where Santiago Calatrava’s sail-like Auditorio de Tenerife has become a city emblem. Beaches start minutes away at golden, Saharan-sand Playa de Las Teresitas, while ferries link the Canaries from the busy harbour and the two-line tram connects Santa Cruz with La Laguna. The city’s calendar peaks with the famous Carnival, and everyday life is all pavement cafés, markets and seafront walks under a mild Atlantic climate.
