DEBRECEN

Debrecen is Hungary’s second-largest city, home to roughly 190,000–200,000 people, first recorded in 1235 and long known as “the Calvinist Rome” for its strong Reformed tradition. The city’s landmark is the Reformed Great Church on Kossuth Square, backed up by the Reformed College, while culture highlights include the Déri Museum and a relaxed café-and-park rhythm around Nagyerdő (Great Forest Park) with its spa complex, zoo and seasonal events. Debrecen is also a practical base for eastern Hungary, with a compact centre that’s easy to cover on foot and local transport, plus Debrecen International Airport (DEB) about 5–7 km from the city centre.
