PHILADELPHIA

Philadelphia is Pennsylvania’s largest city, home to about 1.6 million people (metro around 6.2 million), founded in 1682 by William Penn and famous as the cradle of US independence. Its compact historic core centres on Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, while the city’s big cultural spine runs along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway past the Philadelphia Museum of Art and its “Rocky Steps.” Neighbourhoods add distinct character—Old City’s cobbled streets, Fishtown’s bars and venues, South Philly’s food and sports culture—while green space is generous in Fairmount Park and along the Schuylkill River Trail. Getting in and around is straightforward via SEPTA trains, trolleys and buses, with 30th Street Station as the main rail hub and Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) close to the centre.
