Novi Sad is Serbia’s second-largest city and the capital of Vojvodina, with about 260,000 people in the city proper (around 325,000 in the contiguous urban area). First established in 1694 on the Danube opposite Petrovaradin, it’s best known for the Petrovaradin Fortress—nicknamed the “Gibraltar on the Danube”—which dominates the skyline and hosts major events including the EXIT Festival. The compact centre is an easy mix of Austro-Hungarian façades, pedestrian streets and café squares, with riverfront promenades and quick access to the Fruška Gora hills and monasteries just outside town.
