Nes Church Ruins (Nes kirkeruin) are the remains of a medieval stone church in Nes Municipality (Akershus), located on the headland where the rivers Glomma and Vorma meet, near Vormsund. The original church dates from around the 1100s and was expanded and rebuilt several times over the centuries, including a major conversion to a cruciform church in 1697. The building was burned during the Nordic Seven Years’ War in the 1560s and later rebuilt, but after a lightning strike in 1854 the church burned again and was not rebuilt, largely because the clay ground by the river junction was considered unstable and prone to landslides. Today the conserved ruins are open to the public and are used for cultural and community events, including weddings, services and concerts.
The site is also relevant for metal fans because it appears in Dimmu Borgir’s Death Cult Armageddon era (2003). Band photography credited to Alf Børjesson is part of the album’s visual material, and the ruins at Nes are associated with the on-location group shots used in the release’s artwork (including images used on the back cover/inside visuals, depending on edition).
