SZCZECIN

Szczecin is a northwestern Polish port city of roughly 390,000–395,000 people, set on the Oder River close to the German border and the Baltic via the Szczecin Lagoon. Its roots go back to an early medieval Slavic stronghold (recorded from the 8th century), and it received city rights in 1243, giving it one of the older urban histories in this part of Poland. The city is best known for its maritime identity and waterways, plus a skyline of landmarks such as the Pomeranian Dukes’ Castle and the grand riverside terraces of Wały Chrobrego overlooking the port approaches. The centre is walkable and spacious by Polish standards, with wide boulevards, parks and waterfront promenades, and it works well as a base for trips toward Świnoujście and the Baltic coast, or across the border toward Germany.
