SPITAL AM SEMMERING

Spital am Semmering is a small Styrian mountain municipality of around 1,600 people, set at roughly 800 metres in the Semmering Pass between Vienna and Graz. The settlement grew around a medieval travellers’ hospice founded in 1160, and its location is still defined by transport history: the UNESCO-listed Semmering Railway runs through the area on its scenic descent toward Mürzzuschlag. Today, Spital is best known as the base for Stuhleck, one of the closest major ski areas to Vienna, with lifts and slopes stretching up into the Hochsteiermark hills, plus year-round hiking and viewpoint walks across the surrounding forests and ridgelines. With a small centre and a clear “Alpine stopover” feel, it works as an easy base for mountain days, rail scenery, and short excursions around the Semmering region.
