Burgos is a historic Castilian city of about 175,000 people, founded in AD 884 as a frontier stronghold and later rising as a major medieval centre on the Camino de Santiago. It’s best known for Burgos Cathedral, a UNESCO-listed Gothic masterpiece begun in 1221 and famous for its spires and lavish chapels, including the tomb of El Cid. The compact old town spreads along the River Arlanzón with bridges, plazas and tapas streets, while highlights beyond the cathedral include the hilltop Burgos Castle ruins and viewpoint, the Museo de la Evolución Humana (linked to the nearby Atapuerca prehistoric sites), and riverside parks that make the centre easy to explore on foot. Burgos sits on the main rail and motorway routes between Madrid and the Basque Country, making it a practical stopover or base for northern Castilla y León.
