CHORA

Chora (Ios) is the main town of Ios in the Cyclades, a classic whitewashed hilltop settlement of around 2,000 people in the wider municipality and the island’s traditional hub. Built as a maze of stepped lanes and cube houses above the harbour, it’s best known for its postcard viewpoints, windmills on the ridge, and the church-topped skyline that glows at sunset. The compact centre is made for wandering—small squares, chapels and terrace cafés by day, then one of the Aegean’s most famous bar streets at night. Key sights include the Panagia Gremiotissa church for views over Chora and the sea, the Odysseas Elytis Theatre amphitheatre, and the nearby Skarkos prehistoric settlement just outside town. Getting around is easy: the port at Ormos is a short bus/taxi ride away, beaches like Mylopotas sit just below, and most places in Chora are reached on foot due to the steep, narrow lanes.
