HOOGEVEEN

Hoogeveen is a Drenthe city of about 55,000 people (municipality around 57,000), developed from peat-colony origins in the 17th century and still shaped by canals and flat countryside. It’s best known as a practical regional hub rather than a classic tourist stop, with a compact centre for shopping and cafés, easy cycling routes into Drenthe’s heathland and forests, and quick access to the province’s headline landscapes such as Dwingelderveld and the wider Drents-Friese Wold area. The city is well connected by rail on the north–south corridor between Zwolle and Groningen, and sits close to the A28 motorway, making it a straightforward base for exploring the quiet northeast Netherlands.
