Headbangers Open Air is a heavy metal festival held in Brande-Hörnerkirchen in Schleswig-Holstein, northern Germany, around 40 kilometres from Hamburg. The festival started in 1998 and is known as “the biggest garden party of the world”, a reference to its setting on the grounds of a restored farm in the countryside.
The festival has a strong focus on classic and traditional heavy metal, while also including underground bands, cult names, local acts and newer bands within related styles. Compared with the larger German metal festivals, Headbangers Open Air has a more intimate and old-school character, with the farm setting and garden-party atmosphere forming an important part of its identity.
With its traditional metal focus, rural setting and long-running support for obscure and cult heavy metal acts, Headbangers Open Air has become one of northern Germany’s most distinctive underground metal festivals.
