The Family Mausoleum of James Malcolmson

The Family Mausoleum of James Malcolmson is a Gothic Revival mausoleum in Kensal Green Cemetery in West London. Built in 1861, it stands within one of London’s most historic cemeteries, known for its Victorian funerary architecture, catacombs, chapels and many notable graves.

The mausoleum is closely connected to Black Sabbath’s early visual history. The band were photographed at Kensal Green Cemetery in 1970, during the period around their debut album, and the Family Mausoleum of James Malcolmson appears in one of their most recognisable early photo sessions.

With its heavy stonework, pointed Gothic details and cemetery setting, the mausoleum matched the dark atmosphere that surrounded Black Sabbath’s earliest image. The location remains a point of interest for fans of the band and for those exploring the visual roots of heavy metal in London.
