Bonn is a Rhine-side city of roughly 335,000 people in North Rhine–Westphalia, with Roman roots as Castra Bonnensia and a long reputation as a university and government town. It’s best known internationally as the birthplace of Ludwig van Beethoven and as the former capital of West Germany (1949–1990), a legacy that also helped make it a major UN city today. The compact centre is easy to explore on foot, with highlights including Beethoven-Haus, the Museum Mile (art, history and science museums), the Baroque Electoral Palace (now the University of Bonn), and the riverside promenade. Just south, the Siebengebirge hills and Drachenfels above Königswinter make a classic half-day escape for views over the Rhine. Getting in and around is straightforward via the regional rail network and trams, with Cologne/Bonn Airport nearby and fast ICE connections via Bonn Siegburg station.
