URUGUAY

Uruguay’s heavy metal scene began to emerge in the 1980s, centred mainly around the capital Montevideo. Despite the country’s small size, metal quickly developed a loyal underground following, influenced by the rise of thrash and traditional heavy metal in neighbouring Argentina and Brazil. Early bands such as Alvacast, formed in 1985, helped establish Uruguay’s classic heavy metal sound and remain one of the country’s longest-running and most respected acts.

The late 1980s and 1990s saw the rise of heavier and more extreme styles. Reytoro, formed in 1998, became one of Uruguay’s best-known metal exports, combining thrash and groove metal with lyrics in Spanish and earning recognition across Latin America. Death and black metal also found an audience through underground bands and DIY venues, often connected to scenes in Argentina, Chile, and Brazil.

Montevideo remains the heart of Uruguay’s metal culture, with clubs, rehearsal spaces, and independent promoters sustaining the live scene. Though relatively small in scale, Uruguay’s metal community is known for its passion, consistency, and strong regional connections.

Today, Uruguay continues to maintain a diverse underground spanning heavy, thrash, death, black, and progressive metal, proving that even one of South America’s smaller nations can sustain a dedicated heavy metal identity.
