TUSKA OPEN AIR METAL FESTIVAL

Tuska Open Air Metal Festival, usually known simply as Tuska, is a metal festival in Helsinki, Finland. Founded in 1998, it has grown into one of the best-known metal festivals in Northern Europe and has long been one of the central events in the Finnish summer festival season.

The festival began on a smaller scale in 1998 and was held in Kaisaniemi Park in central Helsinki from 2001 to 2010. Since 2011, it has taken place in the Suvilahti event area, an old industrial site in the Sörnäinen-Kalasatama part of the city. Its urban setting has become one of its defining features, setting it apart from more remote camping-based metal festivals.

Tuska has never been limited to one branch of metal, but has presented a broad profile that ranges from traditional heavy metal to death metal, black metal, thrash metal, doom metal and more modern styles. Over the years, its line-ups have included bands such as Emperor, Anthrax, Dimmu Borgir, Alice Cooper, Opeth, Ghost, Behemoth, Slayer, Korn, Mercyful Fate, Deftones, Carcass and Amorphis.

Its long history, central location and consistently strong line-ups have made Tuska one of the most important metal festivals in Finland. It is also closely tied to Helsinki’s identity as one of Europe’s key cities for heavy music culture.
