Târgoviște is a historic city in southern Romania with about 67,000 people, set on the Ialomița River in Dâmbovița County. It first rose to prominence in the late medieval period and became one of the most important capitals of Wallachia, with its Princely Court used by rulers including Vlad III Dracula. The city’s main landmark is the Chindia Tower, now a symbol of Târgoviște, standing within the old court complex alongside churches, ruins and museums. Târgoviște is also tied to modern Romanian history as the place where Nicolae and Elena Ceaușescu were tried and executed during the 1989 revolution. The centre is compact and easy to explore on foot, while nearby Dealu Monastery, parks and low hills give the city a useful mix of history and quiet provincial atmosphere. Getting in is straightforward by road or rail from Bucharest, roughly 80 km to the southeast.
