Weymouth is a Dorset seaside town of about 53,000 people, set on a sheltered bay at the mouth of the River Wey on England’s south coast. It grew from a fishing and trading harbour into one of Britain’s classic seaside resorts, especially after King George III made regular visits in the late 18th century. Today it is best known for its wide sandy beach, Georgian seafront, old harbour and easy access to the Jurassic Coast. Key sights include Nothe Fort and Nothe Gardens above the harbour, the promenade and Jubilee Clock, and boat trips towards Portland and the Dorset coast. The town also works as a base for Chesil Beach, the Isle of Portland and coastal walks. Getting in and around is straightforward via Weymouth railway station, local buses and road links to Dorchester, with most central areas easy to cover on foot.
