Avalanche Records is an independent record shop in Edinburgh, Scotland. Founded in 1983, it has long been part of the city’s independent music and record-store culture. The shop is now located in Waverley Market, directly above Edinburgh Waverley railway station, giving it one of the most central locations of any record shop in the city.
The store sells new and used vinyl, CDs, cassettes, T-shirts, posters, music-related artwork and other merchandise. Its selection covers many genres, but the metal section is especially strong, with an impressive range of heavier releases alongside indie, alternative, Scottish artists and other forms of physical music.
Avalanche Records has moved several times during its history, including earlier locations on West Nicolson Street, Cockburn Street and Grassmarket. After its recent move within Waverley Market, parts of the shop still have a slightly temporary feel, with shelves and displays that appear more functional than polished. The strength of the shop is the stock itself: a broad independent catalogue with a particularly good selection for rock and metal collectors.
