Merlin’s Cafe Bar is an alternative bar, restaurant and live music venue in Birmingham, England. Located in the city centre, it combines food, drinks, dark fantasy décor, horror imagery and rock and metal-related events.
The venue has a heavily themed interior, with gothic and horror-inspired decoration throughout. Beneath the dense décor, the room also has a striking retro look, with a black-and-white chequered floor, café-style tables and chairs, and red leather sofas that look like they belong in a 1950s diner.
The menu follows the same dark theme. Food items include names such as Dawn of the Dead and Devil’s Fire, both used for spicy chicken dishes, while the cocktail menu includes drinks such as Salem, Penny Dreadful, Friday the 13th, Babadook and Beetlejuice.
Merlin’s Cafe Bar also includes a shop area selling gothic ornaments, alternative decorative items and band-related merchandise. Among the rock and metal items are busts and figures of Eddie from Iron Maiden, Motörhead’s Snaggletooth and various AC/DC-related objects.
The venue’s programme includes live rock and metal nights, DJ sets, themed parties, masquerade balls, horror events and other alternative gatherings, placing the bar within Birmingham’s current rock, goth and dark alternative nightlife.
