Guatemala’s metal scene began to take shape in the 1980s and remains centred on Guatemala City, which is still the country’s main hub for bands, venues, and live shows. One of the longest-running names is Guerreros del Metal, whose roots go back to the late 1970s under earlier names before adopting their current identity in 1987.
Over time, the scene expanded into different subgenres. Caballero Negro, formed in 2008 in Guatemala City, represents the traditional heavy metal side, while bands such as Hacha from Chiquimula and Macabro from Guatemala City reflect the country’s thrash and death metal underground. More recent acts like Umbral show that black metal also has a place in the local scene.
Although Guatemala’s metal community is relatively small, it is persistent and varied, with heavy, thrash, death, black, progressive, and power metal all represented in the country’s current band landscape.
Today, Guatemala’s scene remains underground but active, driven by local bands, small venues, and dedicated fans who continue to keep metal alive in the country.
