Trutnov is a small city in the Hradec Králové Region of the Czech Republic, with about 29,000 people, set on the Úpa River in the wooded foothills of the Krkonoše / Giant Mountains. The settlement is first documented in 1260, with the name Trutnov appearing in royal records by 1301, and it later grew as a mountain-market, craft and industrial town. Today it is best known as a gateway to the eastern Krkonoše region, with hiking, cycling and winter-sport areas close by, but the centre also has a distinct historic core around Krakonošovo náměstí, old town houses, churches and the Podkrkonoší Museum. Trutnov is also known in Czech alternative culture for its long-running festival history and the Na Bojišti area, which has hosted major underground and rock events. Getting in and around is straightforward by rail, bus and road, with regional links toward Hradec Králové, Prague and the mountain towns of northern Bohemia.
