Beaver Bar, known in Finnish as Majava Baari, is a rock and metal bar at Porthaninkatu 9 in the Kallio district of Helsinki, Finland. Opened in March 2010, it was originally conceived as a meeting place for road crew and other people working behind the scenes in the music industry. It later developed into a regular gathering place for musicians and rock and metal fans as well, giving it close ties to Helsinki’s music community.
The bar is small and informal, with an interior largely built and decorated by the owners themselves. Music memorabilia, festival wristbands and various unusual objects have accumulated around the room over the years, while a jukebox allows customers to choose much of the soundtrack. Among the more distinctive details are AC/DC and Dirty Harry pinball machines, while one wall features a large painted beaver head designed in a style reminiscent of Motörhead’s Snaggletooth mascot. Rock and metal dominate the musical identity, although the selection is not limited entirely to heavy music. The compact room and familiar clientele give Beaver much of the character of a local pub.
Professional musicians, technicians and road crew have long formed a noticeable part of the clientele, and people from the Finnish music scene have also worked behind the bar. This connection has led Finnish metal organisations to include Beaver among Helsinki’s established heavy-music meeting places. Its importance to the scene comes primarily from its role as a social gathering spot and its strongly rock-oriented atmosphere.
Beaver Bar became particularly “visible” during the COVID-19 pandemic through Radio Majava. Created inside the closed bar in spring 2020, the internet radio station gave musicians, technicians, restaurant workers and others whose work had disappeared during the shutdowns a platform to broadcast music and programmes. Radio Majava transmitted thousands of hours before ending in June 2022 and received an honourable mention in Helsinki’s Cultural Act of the Year awards for 2020. The concept returned in a smaller form in 2025 as Radio Majava Klubi, with guest DJs presenting weekly sessions at the bar.
A second Majava Baari opened in Tampere in 2016, but the original Helsinki location remains at Porthaninkatu 9. More than fifteen years after opening, Beaver continues to operate as a small Kallio bar closely associated with Finland’s rock workforce and heavy-music community.
