BANGKOK

Bangkok is Thailand’s capital, a Chao Phraya–side megacity of over 11 million in the wider metropolitan region, founded as the royal seat in 1782 and still centred on the Rattanakosin old city. Headliners cluster along the river—the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Pho and Wat Arun—while Chinatown’s Yaowarat, Chatuchak Weekend Market and canal (klong) boat rides add everyday colour beyond the historic core. Contemporary Bangkok mixes galleries, rooftop bars and street-food alleys with green escapes like Lumpini and Benjakitti Parks. Getting around is straightforward on the BTS Skytrain, MRT and Airport Rail Link, with two airports—Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK)—serving regional and long-haul flights.
