Thailand’s heavy metal scene grew out of the country’s broader rock boom in the late 1980s and early 1990s, with Bangkok as the main hub for bands, labels, and live venues. One of the best-known heavy acts is Stone Metal Fire (Hin Lek Fai), formed in 1991, who helped bring a more classic heavy metal sound into the Thai mainstream. Alongside the heavy/hard rock tradition, Thailand also built a respected extreme-metal underground, including black metal pioneers Surrender of Divinity, formed in Bangkok in 1996. Today, Thai metal remains a dedicated subculture—spanning heavy, thrash, death, and black metal—supported by local shows and an active community, even if large, metal-only festivals are less common than general rock events.
