POWERSLAVE

Powerslave is a heavy metal record and merchandise shop inside Galeria Praça Sete at Rua Rio de Janeiro 630 in central Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Founded around 2002–03 by Marcos Taveira, the shop began as a side project while he was still working in banking. As the business grew, Taveira eventually left his bank job to concentrate on Powerslave full time, and by the early 2010s the operation had expanded to several units within the gallery.

The name comes from Iron Maiden’s 1984 album “Powerslave”, reflecting the shop’s heavy metal identity from the beginning. Records, CDs, band shirts and other merchandise form the core of the business, with both major international bands and underground metal represented.

Powerslave has also been closely connected with Belo Horizonte’s concert scene. For many years, the shop has served as a physical ticket outlet for rock and metal shows in the city, including concerts by Andre Matos, Kansas, Skillet and SuidAkrA, as well as numerous local and underground events.

The location is particularly significant within the history of heavy metal in Belo Horizonte. From the 1980s onwards, Galeria Praça Sete developed into one of the main gathering places for the city’s metal audience. Record shops, clothing stores and other music-related businesses filled parts of the gallery, while local demos, concert tickets and information about upcoming shows circulated through the same network of shops.

Many of those businesses have disappeared over the years, but Powerslave remains part of the gallery’s metal tradition. More than two decades after opening, the shop continues to connect the present-day scene with the period when Galeria Praça Sete was one of Belo Horizonte’s main centres for heavy metal culture.
