CELLER PANOTXA

Celler Panotxa is a rock and heavy metal-themed wine and tapas bar located at Carrer de Sant Joan de Malta 53 in the El Clot neighbourhood of Barcelona, Spain. The bar was established around 2020 by David Huerta and Sandra Agudelo, who took over the premises of Celler Ca la Paqui, a traditional neighbourhood wine bar that had operated for several decades before its owners retired in late 2019. Huerta, a longtime customer of the original establishment and a passionate heavy metal fan, initially intended to preserve much of its traditional appearance. However, the COVID-19 lockdown provided an opportunity to redecorate the premises around his musical interests, gradually transforming the old wine cellar into an unusual combination of a traditional Spanish bodega and a heavy metal bar.

The interior is packed with rock and metal memorabilia, including concert posters, vinyl records, signed photographs, figurines and band merchandise. Large murals featuring band logos cover the ceiling, while an Eddie figure, the mascot of Iron Maiden, hangs overhead. One of the more unusual features is a two-metre-tall electric guitar converted into a beer tap. The floor is decorated with images of musicians and historic concerts, and even the menu is designed to resemble a gravestone. Three wooden wine barrels serve as tables, preserving something of the building’s original character. The exterior is equally distinctive, with a black sign featuring heavy metal lettering, illuminated hand-horn symbols and colourful artwork covering the entrance. The soundtrack includes bands such as Metallica, AC/DC, Obús, Kortatu and Extremoduro, generally played at a moderate volume.

Its menu includes Spanish cheeses, cured meats, seafood, pintxos and other dishes, alongside an extensive selection of wines, cava, champagne and vermouth made exclusively for the establishment. Huerta is also known for occasionally dressing as a heavy metal priest, complete with religious robes and sunglasses, jokingly blessing customers with a traditional herbal liqueur. The bar attracts both neighbourhood regulars and rock and metal fans, including international visitors attending music festivals in Barcelona. Huerta has also been involved in organising neighbourhood events featuring live music, food and beer.
