MAASTRICHT

Maastricht is a historic Dutch city of about 125,000 people in the province of Limburg, first mentioned in the 6th century and long known as one of the Netherlands’ oldest towns thanks to its strategic Maas (Meuse) River crossing. It’s best known internationally for the 1992 Maastricht Treaty that helped create today’s European Union, but the city itself feels more like a compact, café-lined “European” hub with medieval streets, Roman and early-Christian roots, and a strong food-and-drink culture. Highlights include Vrijthof square and the Basilica of Saint Servatius, the limestone St Pietersberg caves and viewpoints just outside town, and the old city walls and gates around the centre. Getting in and around is straightforward: Maastricht is walkable, well served by trains to Amsterdam, Brussels and Liège, and sits close to the borders with Belgium and Germany, making it a great base for short day trips.
