On January 14, 2004, Terje “Valfar” Bakken, vocalist and founder of the black metal band Windir, set out on foot to his family’s cabin at Fagereggi, Norway. Three days later, on January 17, his body was found at Reppastølen in the Sogndal valley. He had died from hypothermia after being caught in sudden, severe weather during the journey. Valfar was laid to rest on January 27 at Stedje Church in Sogndal. In March 2004, Windir officially disbanded. The band’s logo is engraved on his tombstone.
