WASHINGTON D.C.

Washington, D.C. is the United States’ federal capital, a city of roughly 680,000 people founded in 1790 on the Potomac River and known for neoclassical monuments, the White House and Capitol, and the free Smithsonian museums that line the National Mall. The compact, walkable core takes in the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, the Washington Monument and major galleries, while neighbourhoods such as Georgetown, U Street and Adams Morgan add cobbled streets, jazz and go-go heritage, and late-night bars. Green space is generous—Rock Creek Park cuts through the city with miles of trails—and the waterfronts at the Wharf and Navy Yard are lively for food and music. Getting in and around is straightforward via the Metro and Union Station, with three airports nearby: Reagan National (DCA), Dulles (IAD) and BWI.
