Cirencester is a historic market town in Gloucestershire, England, with around 20,000 people. Often described as the “Capital of the Cotswolds”, it has roots stretching back to Roman Britain, when Corinium Dobunnorum developed into the second-largest town in Roman Britain after London. Remains from this period include the Roman amphitheatre, while the Corinium Museum holds one of the country’s most important collections of Romano-British archaeology and mosaics. Cirencester later became wealthy through the medieval wool trade, and its historic centre is characterised by Cotswold stone buildings, the large Church of St John Baptist and a traditional market square. The town is compact and easy to explore on foot, with Cirencester Park, Abbey Grounds and independent shops and cafés close to the centre. It also makes a useful base for exploring the surrounding Cotswolds, although the nearest railway station is at Kemble, several miles away.
