Poznań is a major city in western Poland with about 536,000 people (metro around 1.0 million), established in the 10th century and granted city rights in 1253. Often described as one of the cradles of the Polish state, it’s best known for its colourful Old Market Square and Renaissance Town Hall, famous for the mechanical “goats” that butt heads at noon. The historic heart also includes Cathedral Island (Ostrów Tumski) with Poznań Cathedral, while the city’s modern identity leans on universities, business and trade fairs, plus a lively café-and-bar scene. Getting in is straightforward via Poznań-Ławica Airport, located about 7 km west of the city centre, and the city is easy to cover by tram and on foot once you’re in the core.
