CONSTANȚA

Constanța is Romania’s main Black Sea port city, with around 260,000 people in the city proper and a long history stretching back to the ancient Greek colony of Tomis, founded more than 2,500 years ago. It is best known as the country’s largest seaport and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Romania, mixing Roman, Ottoman and modern seaside history. The compact old town sits by the harbour and includes landmarks such as the Art Nouveau Constanța Casino, Ovid Square, the Museum of National History and Archaeology, the Roman Mosaic and the Great Mahmudiye Mosque. The city also works as the gateway to Romania’s Black Sea coast, with Mamaia resort just north of the centre and beaches, promenades and summer nightlife close by. Getting in and around is straightforward by rail and road from Bucharest, with Mihail Kogălniceanu International Airport nearby and ferries, port activity and coastal routes shaping much of the city’s identity.
