Darkthrone is a Norwegian black metal band hailing from Kolbotn, Akershus. Formed in 1986 as a death metal band named Black Death, in 1991, Darkthrone transitioned to a black metal style influenced by Bathory and Celtic Frost and emerged as one of the leading bands in the Norwegian black metal scene.

Darkthrone has been a duo consisting of Fenriz and Nocturno Culto since guitarist Zephyrous departed from the band in 1993. Nocturno Culto and Zephyrous grew up in Kolbotn, while Fenriz was grew up in Vinterbro, that is close to Kolbotn. The two earlier members, Dag Nilsen (bass 1987-1991), and Anders Risberget (Guitar 1987-1988) were both from Kolbotn.

While both Fenriz and Nocturno Culto have lived in Oslo form many years, they now live in smaller towns outside of Oslo. Ferniz has moved back to the area of Kolbotn, while Nocturno Culto lives in the small village Siljan in Telemark.
