EMMEN

Emmen is a northeastern Dutch city in Drenthe with about 110,000 residents in the municipality (around 56,000 in the city itself), shaped by the region’s peat-colony history and later planned post-war expansion. It’s best known today for Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen (opened in 2016) and for being a practical base for the quiet, open landscapes of Drenthe. The centre is compact and easy to navigate, with shopping and cafés around the main squares and a relaxed green feel at Rensenpark, which occupies the former city-centre zoo site. Beyond town, expect flat cycling routes, forest-and-heath day trips, and classic Drenthe attractions within easy reach, while FC Emmen anchors local match days at De Oude Meerdijk.
