SALZBURG

Salzburg is a compact Austrian city of around 150,000–160,000 people on the Salzach River near the German border, founded as an episcopal centre in 696 and shaped for centuries by powerful prince-archbishops and the salt trade. Its UNESCO-listed historic centre is built for easy wandering, with Baroque domes and church towers rising beneath the cliff-top Hohensalzburg Fortress (begun in 1077) and a postcard skyline framed by the Alps. Highlights include the fortress and cathedral district, Mozart’s hometown landmarks, the Residenz squares, and viewpoints from Mönchsberg and Kapuzinerberg, while the city is also famous worldwide for the Salzburg Festival and its year-round classical music culture. Getting in and around is straightforward: Salzburg Hauptbahnhof is a major rail stop for Munich and Vienna, and most central sights are walkable once you’re in the Altstadt.
