LÜBECK

Lübeck is a historic Hanseatic city of around 220,000 people in northern Germany, founded in 1143 and best known for its UNESCO-listed Old Town set on an island between the Trave River and canals. The classic first sight is the Holstentor gate, with brick-Gothic landmarks like St Mary’s Church and the cathedral nearby, plus merchant courtyards and narrow lanes that still feel distinctly medieval. Lübeck is also famous for marzipan (with long-standing cafés and shops in the centre) and for its Baltic connection via the harbour district of Travemünde, where you’ll find beaches, promenades and ferries. The city is compact and walkable once you’re in the old town, and it’s an easy base for the coast and nearby towns, with fast rail links to Hamburg and straightforward onward travel across Schleswig-Holstein and into Denmark.
