Belgrade is Serbia’s capital and largest city, a Sava-and-Danube metropolis of around 1.3–1.4 million people in the city proper (over 1.6 million in the wider urban area), with roots that stretch back to antiquity and a strategic river confluence that has made it one of Europe’s most contested cities. First mentioned as Singidunum under the Romans, it later became the medieval “White City” (Beograd) and today is best known for the hilltop Belgrade Fortress and Kalemegdan Park, the pedestrian Knez Mihailova street, and a big café, bar and live-music culture that runs late. Neighbourhood highlights include bohemian Skadarlija, riverside splavs (floating bars/clubs) and the modern waterfront redevelopment, while the Nikola Tesla Museum and the vast Saint Sava Temple add key cultural stops. Getting in and around is straightforward via Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG), a walkable central core, and a dense bus/tram network linking the main districts.
