Leeds is a city in West Yorkshire, England, and the largest settlement in Yorkshire. It serves as the administrative centre of the City of Leeds Metropolitan Borough, the second most populous district in the United Kingdom. The city is built along the River Aire, at the eastern foothills of the Pennines. Once a small manorial borough in the 13th century and a market town by the 16th, Leeds grew rapidly in the 17th and 18th centuries to become a major centre of wool production and trade.
