Downey is a city in Los Angeles County, California, USA, with about 113,000 people, set southeast of central Los Angeles. Incorporated in 1956, it grew from a Southern California agricultural and suburban community into a major aerospace centre during the 20th century. The city is best known for its role in the Apollo and Space Shuttle programmes, with the former Rockwell/NASA site now home to the Columbia Memorial Space Center, Downey Landing and the Promenade at Downey. Key sights include the Columbia Memorial Space Center, the Downey History Center, the Downey Theatre and the old McDonald’s on Lakewood Boulevard, often cited as one of the oldest surviving McDonald’s restaurant buildings. Getting in and around is straightforward by road via I-5, I-105, I-605 and I-710, with bus links across southeast Los Angeles County and Los Angeles International Airport, Long Beach Airport and Hollywood Burbank Airport all within practical reach depending on traffic.
