Whittier is a low-key Los Angeles County city with a historic Uptown core of tree-lined streets, small shops and cafés, set below the Whittier Hills. The area’s early Californio history is on show at Pío Pico State Historic Park, the restored adobe home of the last Mexican governor of Alta California. For fresh air, locals head into the hills on the Turnbull Canyon and Hellman Park trail network, or follow the Whittier Greenway Trail—a 7-plus-mile rail-trail linking neighbourhoods across town. Getting here without a car is straightforward: Metrolink’s Norwalk/Santa Fe Springs station sits just south, with local buses connecting into Whittier and LA Metro covering wider trips. It’s an easy place to mix a coffee-and-boutique wander in Uptown with a sunset walk in the canyons before dinner.
