SINGAPORE (city)

Singapore is a dense, high-rise island city of about 6.11 million people (June 2025) and one of the world’s classic “city-state” destinations, shaped in its modern form after Sir Stamford Raffles established a British trading post in 1819. Despite its compact size, the city packs in major headline sights: the colonial-era civic district around the Singapore River, the skyline and waterfront at Marina Bay, and food-and-nightlife neighbourhoods such as Chinatown, Little India and Kampong Glam. A strong “garden city” identity comes through in big green stops like the UNESCO-listed Singapore Botanic Gardens, while the shopping spine of Orchard Road and the nightlife of Clarke Quay keep the centre busy after dark. Getting around is straightforward on the MRT and buses, and Changi Airport is one of Asia’s main air hubs, making Singapore an easy base for wider Southeast Asia travel.
