MARIBOR

Maribor is Slovenia’s second-largest city, a Drava River hub of about 112,000 people with medieval roots (town rights in 1254) and a long wine-growing tradition. Its compact centre spans the Lent riverside quarter and Grajski trg around the castle, with Stolni trg leading to the cathedral and its tall bell tower. The Old Vine House celebrates the world’s oldest producing grapevine (over 400 years), and festivals spill along the embankments each summer. For views, ride or hike up to Pyramid Hill; for outdoor time, the Pohorje massif on the city’s edge offers skiing in winter and biking/hiking the rest of the year. Expect laid-back cafés and wine bars, hearty Štajerska cooking, and easy rail links north to Graz and south-west to Ljubljana; Maribor’s small Edvard Rusjan Airport serves seasonal flights, with larger gateways in Graz and Ljubljana.
