Monmouth is a small Welsh market town of about 10,300 people at the meeting of the Monnow and Wye, with medieval roots and a compact centre best known for Monnow Bridge—the only surviving medieval fortified river bridge in Britain with its gate tower still in place. Landmarks include the Grade I Shire Hall on Agincourt Square and St Mary’s Priory Church, whose origins as a Benedictine foundation go back to the 11th–12th centuries. The town looks out to the Kymin above the Wye Valley National Landscape (AONB) for big views and easy walks, and it has a modern music footnote via nearby Rockfield Studios, where major albums have been recorded. Despite lacking a railway station, Monmouth is well linked by bus to Abergavenny and Chepstow and sits on the A40 for road access, making it a practical base for exploring the lower Wye.
