Delhi is India’s federal capital and a megacity of well over 20 million in the National Capital Territory and 30+ million across the wider NCR, with origins traced to early fortifications at Lal Kot (c.1052) and later capitals from the Sultanate and Mughal eras to British-planned New Delhi (inaugurated 1931). Signature sights span three UNESCO World Heritage Sites—Qutub Minar, Humayun’s Tomb and the Red Fort—alongside India Gate, Jama Masjid and the museums and boulevards of Lutyens’ New Delhi. Food runs from Mughlai standards and Old Delhi street staples to modern dining, while green pockets like Lodi Gardens break up the sprawl. Getting around is straightforward via the vast Delhi Metro and the Airport Express (about 25 minutes from New Delhi station to IGI, code DEL). Note that winter often brings smoggy conditions that can affect views and air quality.
